In the Eastern Church, those who do not know how to read or cannot participate in church services, but who want to please God, have long been instructed to perform Jesus' prayer.
The
"It is proper for a Christian to always hold a ladder in his hands and to repeat the prayer of Jesus constantly: in the church, and at home, and in the marketplace, whether standing or sitting, everywhere."
The
Catholics of the Latin rite, and by their example very Eastern, replaced the daily liturgical circle (Divinum Officium) with the prayer of the Holy Rosary (Rosary).
